First Lieutenant Howard Vincent Pickering, 110th Battalion, Canadian Infantry, was killed on October 26, 1917 at Passchendaele Ridge, Belgium. He went overseas in 1916, before the United States was involved in the war. Lieutenant Pickering joined the 4th Canadian Mounted Rifles in April 1917 on the Vimy front, and served in the engagements south of Lens and at Hill 70. He fell at Passchendaele, instantly killed by a sniper as he was leading his men in the attack on the morning of October 26. He is buried near the place where he fell.
