Morgan Smiley Baldwin
Corporal Morgan Smiley Baldwin, Company G, 197th Infantry, U.S. Army, died October 9, 1918 of wounds inflicted ten days prior in serious fighting along the Hindenburg Line. On April 6, 1917 the United States declared war on Germany. That day, Corporal Baldwin, who at the time was practicing law in his family's firm in New York City, upon hearing the news of America's entry into the war, enlisted in the National Guard. He landed in Europe a year later. He is memorialized in a staircase on the Cornell University campus where he spent his undergraduate years, and is buried in the Somme American Cemetery in Picardy in northern France.
