Excerpt from the NY Journal June 13, 1898 "Dr. Syms first heard of his partner's death this morning and was deeply affected by the sad news. To an Evening Journal reporter Dr. Syms said: "Dr. Gibbs was a noble man in every sense of the word. He was first of all a patriot and the first man to qualify as a surgeon from New York and go to the front. He was enthusiastic in all that he undertook, and this enthusiasm was what brought him to the front as a surgeon. The medical profession has lost an honored member in his death."
